CSEND was founded in 1993 in Geneva, Switzerland. Since 2003, it has been accredited by the Swiss National Science Fund as an independent research grant-receiving organisation.

CSEND also holds special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UN ECOSOC) and is a member of the NGO Major Group. In addition, CSEND is accredited to the WTO, WIPO, UNEP, and UNFCCC. It also enjoys observer status in the UN Taskforce on Social and Solidarity Economy.
